Our Story
STEP HEAT radiant heating systems are versatile for use in homes, buildings, boats, RVs, tiny homes, and a range of other applications. STEP stands for the Self-Regulating Technology of Electro Plastics, developed by Stephan Irgens in 1981 as a method of heating automobile seats. The product evolved and in 1994 Stephan and Monica Irgens introduced STEP HEAT to the U.S. and built its headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri. STEP HEAT has since evolved its product line and capabilities as the proven radiant heating choice of architects, specifiers, designers, and progressive homeowners. All radiant heat products are designed and manufactured by Electro Plastics in the USA to exacting standards, and are the result of years of innovation, patents, and a dedication to enhancing the lives of people and our planet. To date, millions of square feet have been installed for various applications throughout the world.
Leadership Team
Stephan Irgens
Stephan Irgens is the CEO and Chief Engineer of STEP HEAT. After receiving degrees, both domestically and internationally, Stephan began his career working for a large global company where he learned how to design systems geared to automate machinery. He soon started his own company, designing and selling fluid power systems and equipment for large-scale ships and offshore oil platforms in the North Atlantic Sea. He expanded into industrial automation and linear electric actuators for industrial and accessibility manufacturers, where his R+D effectively solved his customers problems by simplifying the manufacturing process. During this time, he became deeply interested in the invention and development of conductive plastics, which led to the founding of STEP HEAT, the world’s first, patented, radiant heating system that is explosion proof, intrinsically safe, energy efficient, and sustainable.
MONICA IRGENS
Monica Irgens joined Stephan in 1994 and is President of STEP HEAT. Monica has been active in the radiant heating industry for over 25 years. She was a member of the Radiant Panel Association (RPA) for 15 years and was on the RPA Board of Directors and chairperson of the Electric Committee and the Green Committee. Monica was involved in writing the Electric Radiant Course for the RPA and produced a continuing education course for the AIA/CES on PTC Heating Technology. She is a certified IICRC Senior Floor Inspector and wrote the STEP Warmfloor Handbook. Monica is a member and working with UL, CSA and CE on the standard committee for electric radiant heating. She also works with NEC and CEC codes. She is also a member of the USGBC and has been involved in the design of their company owned building, which is LEED compliant and has been awarded the Energy Star. She keeps updated on all issues concerning sustainability and energy efficiency, including IAQ and the environment.
